The eConsults & Smart Referrals program is a UC systemwide initiative endorsed by the leadership of multiple UC Health Systems. The program provides primary care providers (PCPs) with point-of-care decision support on referral appropriateness, and allows PCPs to receive timely specialist recommendations on lower-complexity referral problems that do not require an in-person evaluation of the patient by the specialist.
If you have a quick, focused question that you might ask a specialist in the hallway or on the phone, think "eConsult". If your question is complex or you would like to refer the patient for an in-person consult, then you should order a standard referral.
An eConsult is an order in CareConnect that allows UCLA providers to ask their UCLA specialist colleagues low-complexity questions, and receive a recommendation in three business days. eConsult questions are narrow in scope and contain enough information for the specialist to provide a valuable response.

A Smart Referral is an upgrade to the standard referral in CareConnect. The goal of a Smart Referral is to optimize the flow of information between the referring provider and the specialist. Cues provided in a Smart Referral guide you to provide key clinical information and perform the appropriate evaluation prior to the patient's appointment with the specialist. Smart Referral allows you to specify whether your request is a one-time consult (and return the patient to you to manage) or if the specialist will actively manage the problem.
